German forces began to be issued the M42 helmet mid-war in 1942. Recognized by it’s flared edge, helmets were cheaper and more efficient to make if the edges weren’t rolled. M42 helmets were made famous by SS Forces who received the best equipment in the military and were rushed to every crisis area.
